aka New Legend of Chu Lia Xiang
I played this when I was 10-11 years old!
Before I got Pokemon, I got this. How I forgot this game, I have no idea. I just remembered it all of a sudden when I found the dusty box in the back of my closet and thought “Whoa, I haven’t seen this for a long time”. Chu Lia Xiang is a Wuxia RPG game for the PC with girly-looking guys and doe-eyed girls, based upon one of the many wuxia novels of the same name set in Ancient China that depicts the heroic adventures of a dude called Chu Lia Xiang (who always carries a fan around) and his friends. Together, they solve crimes and mysteries, fight tough opponents, cheat life and death and embark on mystical quests!
…okay, maybe not mystical quests, but you get my drift, right? It was an RPG that I played even before Final Fantasy O_O
Apparently there are newer versions released nearer 2009-2011’s such as…
But I played the first version and I actually never finished it because it was really tough. It was tough because it was in Chinese and I didn’t know Chinese back then. I still don’t >o<
Although, I fared a lot better than my older sister. She didn’t even make it to Chapter 2 while I managed to get up to the final chapter (Chapter 6) before losing to the final boss, who was this giant hairy scary man with red marks on his face; he’s apparently this supreme ruler of heaven or whatnot and causing grief and misery and MUST BE DEFEATED. I don’t know how I even got that far. I guess I just clicked around a lot and managed to get to the checkpoints as required despite not knowing what to do half the time. A good thing was that main events were highlighted in red too, so that helped a lot.
The game wasn’t easy compared to other RPGs, that was for sure. I stopped playing it for a while then after my devastating defeat to the red hairy guy and then the computer decided to freeze all over and everything on my L drive was wiped out.
Since then, this game was forgotten…
Of course, the graphics are a bit lame compared to video games that are out now.
You start out as Young Chu (let’s just call him that for the moment), he lost his mother when he was young and his father wants him to become a scholar, not some kung fu fighting tarzan that leads to nothing good other than having a bounty on your head for the rest of your life. Back in those old days, in Ancient China, you either became a scholar or knew kung fu, I suppose, cos people were more bloodthirsty and violent then and you had to defend yourself. However, a dream about his mother getting attacked by 3 robbers who he can’t defeat at all sets Young Chu’s mind up. He will learn kung fu and that’s final!!!
Later on, for some reason I can’t remember, Young Chu goes to the poor slummy peasant village to find the young village drunk, some long-haired bozo with chin hair despite being the same age as Chu who I have nicknamed as Fa. So Chu and Fa become friends quite quickly cos opposites attract, I suppose. I mean, Chu is some rich spoilt brat with manners while Chu’s a slurring alcoholic with bad breath. One day, Chu’s father goes out and is attacked by robbers so Young Chu and village drunk Fa goes to save them. You leave the safety of your village and into the world map, to this big forest area to fight baddies. Cue your first boss battle where you need to use at least a few potions/medicines to survive.
After saving your father, you find out he is escorting a visitor, who I have nicknamed as Miss Lee to the Chu house, Miss Lee is an educated snobbish-looking girl but she is actually a helpful ally. Later on though, Chu’s father has to leave the house and Chu and Fa and Miss Lee all leave to embark on their adventures. They come across Miss Song, a little girl who can cook really well, and Miss So, a girl who is also extremely intelligent. Saving these pretty damsel in distresses will earn you valuable travelling buddies who will help you solve crime and all sorts of mysteries!
The game skips to 8 years later, where Chu is much older and has suddenly become a manwhore because all of the women he meets he can’t help but flirt with them and somehow they go all googly-eyed for him, and then there were all those awkward kissing in-game CGs that made me go O___O It’s still a game for kids and teens, but still. Geez. On the other hand, Fa is more reserved, but still can’t help but get drunk, like, every 5 minutes. Anyway, things in ancient China become more hectic and its up to Chu and the Scooby gang to solve them, eventually taking on the big hairy guy with red scars. Somehow you travel to the giant tree that conceals the lair of all sorts of dangerous assassins and then you face off with him. I don’t really know why you do. he must be an evil dictator or something.
Anyway, I can’t find a lot of screenshots of the game or pictures other than the manuals I have, so here are my own scans:
